Dry Eye

Dry eye syndrome is caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. Consequences of dry eyes range from subtle but constant eye irritation to significant inflammation and even scarring of the front surface of the eye. The sooner dry eye is treated the better to get it is controlled.  Our doctors can help relieve your dry eye symptoms with targeted treatment. 

Amblyopia

A common vision problem in children is amblyopia, or "lazy eye." It is so common that it is the reason for more vision loss in children than all other causes put together. Amblyopia is a decrease in the child's vision that can happen even when there is no problem with the structure of the eye. The decrease in vision results when one or both eyes send a blurry image to the brain. The brain then "learns" to only see blurry with that eye, even when glasses are used. Only children can get amblyopia. If it is not treated early on, it can cause permanent loss of vision. For this reason, it is very important that children start coming in for visual and ocular health exams at 6 months followed by 2-3 years old and annually thereafter. 


Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the blood glucose levels are too high. After a meal, food is broken down into a sugar called glucose which is transported by the blood to the cells throughout the body. Insulin is needed to convert the glucose into energy. With Type 1 or early-onset diabetes, there is a lack or absence of insulin in the body to perform this process. Type 2 or late-onset diabetics produce enough insulin; however the body does not properly use it to convert the glucose into energy. Prolonged increased blood glucose levels can lead to nerve and blood vessel damage, which ultimately can result in stroke, heart disease, blindness, extremity amputation and even death. 

The most damaging eye condition caused by diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. This disease increases the longer someone has diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy causes the blood vessels of the retina (inner layer of the back of the eye) to leak, swell or develop abnormally which causes damage to the retina. This can result in vision loss. Sometimes, a diabetic does not know they have leaky blood vessels in their eyes until a vision exam is done, therefore, it is paramount for diabetic patients to have visual and ocular health exams annually.


Glaucoma

Glaucoma is not just one eye disease, but a group of eye conditions resulting in optic nerve damage, which may cause loss of vision. Abnormally high pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure) usually, but not always, causes this damage. Unfortunately there is no pain involved in this disease, causing people to lose more than 50% of their peripheral vision before knowing something is wrong. Early diagnosis and treatment can minimize or prevent optic nerve damage and limit glaucoma-related vision loss. It's important to get your eyes examined regularly in order to prevent glaucoma.


Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is a common eye condition among people age 50 and older. It is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly. In some people, AMD advances so slowly that vision loss dos not occur for a long time. In others, the disorder progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in one or both eyes. The vision loss makes it difficult to recognize faces, drive a car, read, print or do close work, such as sewing or fixing things around the house. There are now treatments for the wet AMD and specific vitamins that could help decrease the risk of both dry and wet AMD.
